Jesus paid the price so that you do not have to pay it again.
Colossians 2:14 – “Having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
Let us use a simple analogy.
A great king walked by a giant field and found many labourers working for a slave master – condemned to harsh conditions as punishment for their debt. The labourers came from different cities and towns. They spoke many languages, but one thing was common to them all – they were heavily indebted, and even if the labourers worked all day and night for the rest of their lives, they would never be able to pay off the debt. The burden of the obligation imposed on them by the slave master was backbreaking, and it resigned them to a life of condemnation.
The king was merciful and kind. So, He sent His only son to cancel the charge (price/cost) of the labourer’s indebtedness, take it away and charge it to Himself instead. This meant that any previous claim against the labourers was cancelled as if it never existed – the claim was taken away and transferred to the king’s son, who paid the price in full. The labourers were extremely happy to be set free, and they all went their separate ways – they had been set free indeed!
However, the slave master will not let it go. So, at every opportunity he got, the wicked slave master would go knocking on the door of the labourers and say – “Pay me back the money you owe me or else you must come back to work in my fields.”
To another, he said – “Don’t you remember how much you owe me, why are you living free and in joy – you are not truly free, so come back now and repay your huge debt.”
Although the slave master was fully aware that the great king had sent His son to cancel and take away the claim against the labourers, he was also aware that some laborers would fall for his trick. So, he kept going from door to door to see who would fall for his deceit and go back under his condemnation.
Some of the labourers stood their ground and said to the slave master – “Look here, the merciful king sent His son to cancel the charge, and all records relating to those charges have ceased to exist, so you can no longer condemn me to your hard labour.” Once the slave master realised that the labourer had uncovered his trick, he had no choice but to walk away because that labourer did not fall for his deception.
But sadly, other labourers fell for the trick and did not stand their ground to enforce what the king’s son had done for them. So, they fell back into the condemnation of the slave master.
The slave master requesting another payment for a claim that has already been paid in full can be termed “double-dipping.” Jesus paid the price so that you do not have to pay it again. So, stand your ground and enforce your freedom!!!
Colossians 2:14-15: “God cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” (NLT)
