Interviews, interviews, interviews!!! Whether you are just about to get your foot into the career wagon or you are looking to move on to a new wagon, you would have to make a good first impression at that not so exciting process called an “interview” and believe me when I say that first impressions count so make it count for you.  A lot of people go for job interviews preparing for everything but their outfits, but may I remind you that your interviewer would be assessing the total package…

I think I have had my fair share of interviews in the past year and God am I glad it is over! For now at least, before I need to move on to another wagon. I must say that I completely stick to my personal style even for interviews and I just try to make sure that the outfit is appropriate and I find the right balance. Notice how I use the word “try”? because I really have to try hard. Sometimes, it can be somewhat of a task trying to look stylish to an interview and not have your interviewer look at you like really? Were you on your way to a style show? Did you enter the wrong room? Lol!

When you walk into that interview room, your outfit is going to make a statement about you so what do you want to say? You want to make a memorable first impression and stand out from the other candidates so here are a few tips:

  • Knowing your audience is the key to being able to captivate them so do your research; find out the company’s dress code if they have one and dress accordingly;
  • Choose well cut shift dresses, skirts, trousers and shirts;
  • Wear cool colors like black, grey, blue, tan, and brown simply because they are easy on the eyes. This does not mean you cannot wear other colors, these are just safe options;
  • Simple jewelry would be appropriate – stud earrings, a simple necklace or pearls and a wrist watch;
  • Wear shoes that make you walk smart, relaxed and confident – you do not want to wobble around like you lack confidence (try on your shoes and do a practice walk around the house if you have to);
  • Your hair should be neatly done – you do not want to go for an interview with messy hair;
  • Wear light makeup – try not to overdo it with too many colors on your face;
  • Iron, iron, iron – take a few minutes to make your outfit wrinkle free;
  • Manicured and clean nails – remember that you might be gesturing a whole lot with your hands during your interview;
  • Smelling good is nice but wearing it light is advisable – you do not want to wear an overpowering smell.

Here are some ideas that might cross your mind but you need to completely stay away from:

  • Avoid wearing bangles that would clank noisily together; all that noise is a big distraction for you and your interviewer;
  • Resist wearing anything that sparkles; you are going for an interview and not a party, save that outfit for your celebration party once you get the job;
  • You might also want to ensure that you are not indecently exposed, let your wits do the talking.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in looking stylish to an interview, you just need to get it right and not overdo it. Your confidence would be sky-high when you know you look the part so make sure you spend some time putting together that winning outfit.
